🎯 Goal and client

Grupo Planeta’s goal was to offer a wellbeing experience through meditation with quality content. Diana is the first meditation studio for voice experiences, letting you get started with meditation and mindfulness at home. It works for all levels and different times of day, according to your mood. The goal: to be your go-to place, where you can come every day to build a meditation habit, with the best content and the best professionals.

💬 Voice interaction

“Alexa, quiero meditar” (“I want to meditate”) or “Alexa, ayúdame a dormir” (“help me sleep”) are some of the phrases to start meditating or relaxing on Alexa with experienced teachers in meditation and mindfulness. Diana recommends the courses best suited to your level and the time of day. Choose a course by its title, for example: “pon introducción a la meditación” (“play introduction to meditation”). And if you need help de-stressing, sleeping or even learning the basics of meditation, it builds a playlist with the best meditations. It also includes sounds for meditation, mantras and relaxing music.

🤖 Channel

  • Amazon Alexa. A 100% voice-first audio playback experience for devices without a screen. If the device has a screen (multimodal), visual support helps users see their progress and navigate the content.
  • Web and mobile. A web app (Progressive Web App) providing visual support for the experience on devices without a screen. Alexa skill users can check all their progress and the available content at app.dianaskill.com.

🌍 Reach: languages and countries.

Available in every country that uses Alexa in Spanish from Spain (es-ES), Mexico (es-MX) and the United States (es-US), as well as Portuguese in Brazil (pt-BR).

💻 Which technologies and libraries did we use?

Amazon Alexa features:

  • AudioPlayer, Alexa’s native feature for audio playback,
  • APL for the full multimodal experience on devices with a screen, including the home screens and touch selection of actions,
  • Custom Tasks, which together with Quick Links give access to the different features, or intents, while capturing tracking UTMs,
  • Alexa Shopping Actions (beta): after completing a course, users can add the instructor’s book to their Amazon cart to keep learning.
  • Alexa In-Skill Purchases: users can access premium content, specialist courses and sounds with a monthly subscription.

💎 How did we build this voice app?

We built the product together with Grupo Planeta. We started by researching the market and understanding users’ needs through interviews and surveys. Then we conceptualized and defined the minimum viable product, moved on to designing the conversational experience, and built the Alexa skill around the available content. Along the way, we went through several product iterations, adding features and content, each with beta testing with users and the resulting lessons and improvements.

We prioritized a guided conversational experience: with so much content and so many different features, users need to know, and be in control of, what they want to do. The experience is also robust to changes of context and to the different ways Alexa users express themselves.

🗓 Key dates

  • 09/21/2020: Soft launch. Days spent improving the model that understands users (NLU).
  • 09/25/2020: Official launch. Featured in the Alexa, ayúdame a dormir newsletter.
  • 11/14/2020: The skill was recommended in Alexa’s “good morning” message, for International Yoga Day.
  • 02/18/2021: Featured in the Alexa, ayúdame a dormir newsletter.
  • 07/15/2021: New version with the option to buy the authors’ books.
  • 08/05/2021: Launch of the website for Alexa skill users, app.dianaskill.com.
  • 05/03/2022: New version with premium content through a monthly subscription.
